“Much Ado About Nothing ” is a comedy play by William Shakespeare written in 1599. Well it’s 2019 and Manny Machado is .. in play, and it’s no comedy. It’s high drama and the Yankees are in the middle of it. There’s much ado about Machado for good reason. The 26 year old 4 time all-star is the premier 2019 free agent , along with Bryce Harper. The Yankees have expressed serious interest in Machado. They met with the 2 time gold glover on December 19th at Yankee Stadium, putting his image in pinstripes on the jumbo-screen scoreboard. Without knowing all the particulars to the negotiations, it seems like the Yankees want Manny, but at their price-point which is far less than the 10 years / $300M he is looking for. It is believed that Manny wants to play in NY for the Yankees and he would even be willing to take slightly less, but the two sides are still far apart. Brian Cashman has shown no interest in Harper, at least not in public. So as this drama unfolds, we won’t know until the play is over, but for now it might well be that the Yankees took themselves out of serious contention for Machado or Harper (or even Patrick Corbin) when they traded for Giancarlo Stanton and his 10 year nearly $300M contract .. and that could turn out to be a tragedy.
