YANKS “SWEEP” BIRDS !?!

How did the Yankees “sweep” a 4 game series ( May 31- June 3)  vs. the O’s in Baltimore with only 2 wins? They did it because 2 games were rained out.

After the Thursday series opener was postponed, Friday night’s game was highlighted by a very solid pitching performance by Sonny Gray, and a 438 foot Home Run by Aaron Judge, leading the way to a 4-1 victory. Gray (4-4) went 6.0 innings, allowed 1 run, 4H, 0BB / 6K for the win. Gleyber Torres had 2 hits and an RBI. Austine Romine who has been swinging a very hot bat (.375 BA), added a RBI 2B, and you can’t say enough about the job he has done behind the plate defensively, especially catching Sonny Gray. Aaron Judge provided insurance with a monster blast to LF. Aroldis Chapman had a 1-2-3 9th, striking out the side for the save (13). Andrew Cashner (2-7) took the loss for the O’s.

The Yankees played on Saturday, but not before a 1 /12 hour rain-delay. The Yanks pounded out 13 hits and were helped out with 3 errors by the Birds. Andujar sparked the offense with a 2B, HR, 3RBI, Gardner added 2 2B, Hicks had 3 hits, 2 RBI and Stanton had 2 hits, HR, 2 RBI. Masahiro Tanaka was not particularly sharp, but did gut-out 5.1 inning for the W (7-2) allowing 8 hits and 4 earned runs, 3 HRs. Most concerning is that he continues to allow the long ball at an alarming rate. Since the start of the 2017 season, Tankaka has surrendered 50 HRs , which is the most by any pitcher in MLB. Kevin Gausman took the loss (3-5) 5.1 innings, 9H, 6R, 5ER, 0BB / 9K.

Sunday’s game was rained out, bringing the total of Yankee postponed games to 6. They’ve had 5 rainouts and 1 snow-out so far this season, one more than they had all last season. I won’t go into my rant about retractable roofs. I’ll put a .. lid on it (so to speak).

Next up, a make-up double header in Detroit. Severino will pitch the 1st game, and German will go in the night cap. Believe it or not, the weather forecast is for clear skies.

As always,

Go NYY !!
