TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T BAD

Meat Loaf sang about it in 1977, and for the most part he’s right…

TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T BAD.

When you think about it in a baseball context, it’s true.

If a team wins 2 of every 3 games played, they would end up

with an amazing 108 wins at the end of the season.

Look at it another way …the Yankees recently called up 3 position

players from the minors : Sanchez, Judge & Austin.

If 2 out of 3 become solid major league players the Yankees will

be very pleased. They also called up 3 young pitchers  .. Cessa,

Green and Heller. Again, if 2 of 3 proved they belong in the bigs,

Yankee brass would be extremely satisfied.

So why does it feel deflating and simply not good enough that

the Yankees won 2 of 3 this weekend from the Baltimore Orioles ?

Well, they took the first two games and had a chance to sweep.

The Yankees have been trying to play catch-up all season.

They have tried to dig out of a hole they dug themselves by starting

the season with a 9-17 record, mainly because they could not hit

the ball and score runs early on.

They had a chance on Sunday to jump over 2 teams in the wild-card hunt and pull

within 1 1/2 games of the team they were hosting.

Seattle, Houston & Detroit all lost on Sunday. By sweeping today, the Yankees

would have jumped over the M’s & Astros in the WC standings, and brought

themselves to within 1 game of the Birds in the loss column.

Instead they are 3 1/2 out of the 2nd WC with 4 teams ahead of them.

What makes today’s loss particularly frustrating is that it was the 7th time

this season the Yankees were attempting a 3 game sweep, and now they

are 0-7 in those games (outscored 43-7) & for the 7th time have to say..

Two out of Three Ain’t Bad.

It also felt like a huge let down because the Yanks outscored the O’s

27-14 over the weekend, and a sweep at home was just what the team

needed before going on the road vs. KC & then Baltimore @ Camden Yards.

Yes, they did sell off at the trading deadline, added key prospects to their farm,

and are in a sense satisfied just with the fact that their young home-grown prospects

are experiencing meaningful and pressurized late season baseball, but if the Yankees

want to make a legitimate run at the playoffs, they need to go into September like a ..

BAT OUT OF HELL !!

Right Meat Loaf ??

Right !!
