Wow.. it doesn’t feel like 6 years ago tonight the Yankees celebrated
their 27th Championship on the infield of their brand new stadium.
Time certainly moves quickly, and when you look back at that night
as a Yankee fan, you realize more and more, just how special that
Championship was.
***The Core Four of Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte & Posada were nearing the
end of their careers, and as it turned out they earned their 5th
and final WS Ring. The accomplishment was not only amazing
in the fact that 5 Rings is more than most teams have, let alone players,
but also that it spanned such a long period of time from 1996 to 2009.
It framed and crowned the careers of 4 legendary players that will
be remembered by all Yankee fans as winners and true … Champions !!
***The timing of the WS Victory could not have been better.
The Yankees celebrated the opening of the new Billion Dollar Palace
in style by winning a Championship in the first year, just as Babe Ruth
and the 1923 Yankees went all the way in the first year of the old Yankee Stadium
There were many (including myself) who felt the old stadium should never
have been torn down. Some felt it was sacred ground, and some even feared that the new
stadium built across the street would be cursed for that reason and never see a Championship.
Well .. winning the Series in the Stadium’s 1st year of existence was a
reason for celebration … and relief.
*** The ’09 Championship also brought to an end a different kind of talk about being cursed.
When the Red Sox won the World Series in ’04, by coming back from 0-3 to beat us 4 straight
on their way to their first Series win in 86 years, they said they not only broke the curse
of Babe Ruth, but reversed the curse, and the Yankees would never win another.
Good thing for ’09 because 11 years later, they would still be making that claim,
and who would want to deal with that ??
So as you can see, Championship #27 had huge historic significance,
and the significance gets greater with each passing year .. especially
when you realize the Yankees have not been back to the World Series since,
and have played in only one playoff game (WC game loss ’15) in the last 3 years.
Here’s a tribute video I wrote to honor the 2009 World Champion NY Yankees …
